CVs and Cover Letters – Make Them Shine

CVs

Employers usually ask applicants to submit a covering letter and CV.

A CV is a short, written summary of a person’s skills, achievements and experience. It is used in the first stages of an application process and is often requested by employers instead of an application.

CVs come in different styles but there are some typical items to include on one. These could be:

· Contact details (name, address, telephone number, email address)

· A short personal profile that introduces you to potential employers

· Work and education history

· Hobbies, interests or achievements

Covering letters

A covering letter should always accompany a CV. It is a short letter that introduces the applicant and encourages the employer to consider the applicant for the job.

There are some good tips that you can use before and during creating a cover letter:

· Research the company before you begin

· Make sure you are sending it to the right person or contact – ensure the company name is also correct

· Write an opening paragraph making sure you name the job you are applying for

· Make sure you explain why you are suitable for the job

· Back up any statements you make with evidence

· Use the right language and tone but make sure to keep it professional

· Make sure you sign off using a traditional method of ending a letter (e.g. Kind regards, Yours sincerely)

· Double check your spelling and grammar

· Keep a copy for reference in case you reach interview stage

You should write a new covering letter for each application you make to ensure it is targeted to that company and job.
